Dojo is a physical hardware security device that connects to an internet router. It’s sleek minimal design gives consumers the option of displaying the device openly if they choose, while the app experience must resonate with the device experience/feedback. How do we create a minimal experience? By designing an app that users should not need to interact with all the time.

Dojo is personified and designed as a conversational app that guides the user through on-boarding, monitoring and the notifications layer. It pings user only when necessary — it’s an app designed to not be used (often).

The ripple UI is an extension from the device to the app to display levels of alerts. Iconography is an essential design feature for glanceable content.

How can we visualize data and its interactivity between IOT devices? I was drawn to the ripple, a continuous vibration that reflects calm and reacts when disturbed. It illustrates the activity of data in and out of the home. The ripple became the visualization for the product, from the UI on the device, to icon on the app.

We explored various interaction models and came up with an experience that we can layer in a unique conversational app, and keeping the familiar dashboard functionality.

I focused on building out the information architecture and wireframes. The UI work included developing a set of iconography and UI elements. Iconography became an essential design feature for glanceable content. The ripple UI on the device and the app is an extension product.

For the app development phase, I documented the app interaction experience and worked closely with the client on building and testing out the prototype.
