The project:
A complete UX redesign for Apple Education online support.
The problem:
The original Apple Education support was condensed into one outdated and overwhelming page. There was far too much information on the page without a clear way for users to navigate the content. The layout was complicated, confusing and in need of both UX and UI design.
My role:
As the sole designer leading the redesign, I collaborated with a small team consisting of a content producer and a content manager. Reporting to the creative director, I set up checkpoints for reviews and presented work throughout the phases of the project. Working independently as designer and project manager, I came up with the strategy, defined the content outline, as well as designed and sourced the UI for the redesign.
There were many challenges to this project, starting with a complex audience for the educational content pages and a sweeping amount of information therein. Catering to teachers, students, administrators and IT professionals (often the same person with multiple roles), the redesign needed to consider the user and their goals in visiting the pages. The original scope of the project had a four week timeline. In uncovering the complexity of the content and engaging with product marketing, the timeframe required significant adjustments (in the order of 3x). I spent 4-5 weeks working with the project producer and content manager just to create a content outline. The process required continuous engagement with product marketing to align our objectives and guide them in the UX thinking. Ultimately we successfully navigated all of the challenges of this project to produce content-rich and organized materials for the audience.
The ideation process was primarily focused on curating an overwhelming list of content into digestible information segments. I began by stepping back to see the big picture and how all of the content was interrelated, and then began to put it into a sensible order. This, married with smart design and functional UX made the pages easy to navigate and nice to view.
Working with an enterprise tool, the UX/UI had to be built with a component-based CMS (Content Management System). With this in mind, I had to be thoughtful in how to optimize the components to showcase content in mobile and desktop views.
The new UX features a main Landing Page, and 2 subpages.
Each page has very specific user intents to guide users to the information they need. Customers get to the pages from organic search, from the Apple Support Site, or other education resources. Cross-linking between the pages allows easy information navigation.
